I ran across this issue after upgrading from OpenMRS 1.8.3 to 1.9.0. When searching for a patient, the list of patients uses a short date format (8/30/77) for the birthdate rather than a long date which it previously showed (30-Aug-1977). It should continue to show the long format as it did previously.

Let us use a global property as Wyclif suggests, but set its default value to the old one which James expects.
- Add a global property named searchWidget.dateDisplayFormat, look at OpenmrsConstants.CORE_GLOBAL_PROPERTIES() to see how to add a core global property
- You need to cache the global property's value and update when it is changed/delete by making PersonListItem implement GlobalPropertyListener, it should default to display the date as 30-Aug-1977
- To format the birth date, look at PersonListItem.java for the line that looks like: birthdateString = Format.format(person.getBirthdate());
